Demolition of flooded Arlington homes begins

Posted on June 3rd, 2011 No Comments

Flooding has long been a problem for homes across Arlington’s Rush Creek, and, because of this, the city will be demolishing at least fifty homes that were built along the creek. The demolition project will cost the city $16 million.

City officials decided to begin demolishing the homes five years ago when six homes were flooded beyond repair. The officials have said that no amount of dredging in the creek has helped decrease the flooding. By demolishing the homes, officials say they can create an open, green space that will absorb rain water.

Despite its practical advantages, residents of Rush Creek whose homes will not be destroyed are not happy with the demolition project. They have stated that the project will negatively interfere with their lives until it is finished in in the fall.
