FEMA: No Federal Aid for Arlington Flood Damage

Posted on October 22nd, 2010 No Comments

Texas will not receive any federal aid for flood damage from Tropical Storm Hermine, the Federal Emergency Management Agency announced Friday.

The federal government said damage from the storm, which includes more than 200 homes, is capable of being handled by state, county, and local resources. In a letter dated Friday, Federal Emergency Management Agency administrator W. Craig Fugate, said: “Based on our review of all the information available, it has been determined that the damage from this event was not of such severity and magnitude as to be beyond the capabilities of the state . . . local governments, and voluntary agencies.”

The city of Arlington, which sustained massive damage during the storm, must now find a way to buy out flood-damaged homes along Rush Creek without federal assistance. “It disappointed us greatly,” said Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck. “We think this qualified for presidential aid.” There are still FEMA programs that can be used for home buyouts, which Cluck said he will pursue. “It will not be a quick process unfortunately,” said Cluck. “Sometimes or many times, it is a long delay. Any hope that this will be over with quickly has been dashed.”
