City Council Hears Arlington Flood Damage Repair Pleas

Posted on October 14th, 2010 No Comments

Arlington residents urged the City Council on Tuesday to fix Rush Creek so they no longer live in fear of flooding.

At least 129 homes and 68 apartments were damaged in Arlington during Tropical Storm Hermine. Most of the damaged homes are in west Arlington near Rush Creek, where flooding has become more severe as the area has been developed. Residents told the Arlington City Council Tuesday that they are hesitant to make repairs if the flooding will only continue.

On September 20, Governor Rick Perry requested a presidential disaster declaration for 13 counties in Texas damaged by Hermine flooding. Fiona Allen, Deputy City Manager for Arlington, said the city expects a decision from the White House sometime this month.

The city, which has waived all permitting and inspection fees for flooded properties, has already issued 12 permits to homeowners making repairs. Arlington does not require property owners to apply for permits to remove damaged drywall or carpet.
